Creative Writing Unit
10TH GRADE STANDARD ALIGNED UNIT
Fairytales have been around for a very long time and they have been rewritten for about as long as they have existed. Why are the same tales told over and over again? What is it about them that is so appealing? For this unit, we will focus on the tale of Cinderella and some of its many versions, such as Cinder by Marissa Meyer, the film Ever After, the Grimm Brothers’ Cinderella, The Little Glass Slipper by Charles Perrault, a couple of songs from Into the Woods, and “Cinderella,” a poem by Gwen Straus. How does these retelling compare to what we already know, have seen (especially from Disney), or read? Along with the reading of these different versions, we will embark on the process of writing our own retellings. At the start of November, we will begin writing our 10,000-word short stories, using NaNoWriMo and its abundance of resources as a guide. We will discuss plot, setting, characters, themes, and even literary devices.
